Bedbugs have recently found their way back into the United States and are showing up in apartments, hotels, private homes and other places. Fortunately, there is treatment to get rid of them.
Everyone should be very careful bringing in used furniture or bedding. Also, be sure to check all luggage when you return from traveling, as this is one of the most common ways of causing infestation.
So far, there have not been any reports of begbugs at ******* ****.
The following is an addendum to your lease.
ADDENDUM TO LEASE
Tenant is to notify management if a problem of bedbugs is suspected. Tenant is not to try to treat the infestation as treatments available to the general public are of limited effectiveness.
Tenant shall pay the cost of any extermination or bedbugs or other treatment to remedy an infestation, and any repairs occasioned by any such infestation or by any such treatment, including, to the extent attributable to tenant’s failure to keep the premises free from bedbugs, the cost of treatment and repairs to other residential units and common areas within the property.

I know this is very long to read, but can someone please translate this for me. I have not yet signed it, because I do not want to be responsible for the bedbugs if another tenant brought them here. And how would I know which tenant brought them here if in fact they did.
I do not feel comfortable signing the addendum not knowing the extent of it, and will I get in trouble for not signing and turning it in?

Call your landlord and ask him/her to break it down for you. To me it says that if their is a bedbug infestation in your apartment you cannot treat it yourself, the management of your apartment will hire an exterminator and you will be required to pay the costs. Sounds weird that you would have to pay… Call your landlord.
Basically, it states if you have bed bugs, you cannot treat the problem. You have to contact the apartment complex and pay the person to fix the problem.
